POWER PULLING ASSOCIATION

THE WORLDS MOST POWERFUL MOTORSPORT - MINI VERSION

SLEDGES

THE PPA SLEDGES

WHAT IS THE SLEDGE ?

The SLEDGE is the weight transfer which tractors have to pull down the track with the simple job of providing fair competition for all classes that hook to the front. This mechanical machine is built with the ability to transfer weight from the back of the sledge to the front using a series of gears connected to the sledges axel and chains that drive the weightbox.

The Power Pulling Association operates with two sledges. One for the A & B Class Mini Modifieds and a smaller Sledge for the Garden and Compact Diesels.

Both Sledges are inspected and sanctioned by the European Tractor Pulling Committee.

At the start of a Pull

The sledge is positioned on the start line with the weight box over the sledge wheels making for an easy start for the tractor hooked on the front.

During the Pull

The weight box moves forwards gradually increasing the load onto the pan which causes friction until the tractor stops.

At the end of the Pull

A measurement is taken and a green light is shown allowing the sledge

to drive itself back to the start line under its own power ready for the next tractor.

Being self-propelled means theres no need for a tow back.

THE JUDGE - MINI MODIFIED SLEDGE

This sledge was first built in 1985 in Cambridgeshire but was sold a few years later and was used as a back -up sledge until the end of 1993 where the main mini puller sledge was retired.

The start of 1994 saw the formation of the PPA who under took work to make the old back-up sledge the new main sledge and became known as the 'Undertaker'. The Judge sledge is now owned by Geoff Brown who burns much midnight oil to keep the sledge to its current BRONZE Grading by the ETPC (European Tractor Pulling Committee Sledge Inspection Team)

The Sledge weighs around four tons and has the stopping force of over thirteen tons to allow the supercharged A class Mini Modifieds to hook on the front. The sledge also is fitted with a diesel land rover engine to allow the operator to drive the sledge to and from the track as well as back to the start line after each pull.

TRY YER LUCK - GARDEN & COMPACT DIESEL SLEDGE

This sledge was built in Northamptonshire in the spring of 2010. It has the ability to allow Garden and Compact Diesel Pullers to hook to the front and stop them down the track in fair competition. This sledge is fitted with a 1.9L Peugeot diesel engine and is self-propelled allowing the operator to drive the sledge to and from the track as well as back to the start line after each pull. The operator has a choice of 4 gears of which cannot be changed whilst the sledge is in pulling motion and this is to set the speed of the weight box depending on the class pulling at the time. The Sledge is now owned by the PPA and is graded at SILVER by the ETPC (European Tractor Pulling Committee Sledge Inspection Team)
